| Comments: | We have purchased Robbins Oak engineered hardwood tongue and groove flooring and are preparing the terrazzo floors for glue down installation. We have door jams that will need to be either undercut or we will have to make a template to cut the flooring. Some the jams are wood and some are metal. If we undercutthe doors, we are having a difficult time figuring out how to get the flooring under the jam on both sides and not slide the it very much on the glue. This is proving to be especially difficult at the door whichgoes from the living room to the hallway. This metaljam is about 1 and 5/8 inches deep on each side before we get to the plaster. | Comments: | Franklyn: Nice website. Seems very helpful. My wife and I have a wood floor. About 400 square feet, 2.5 inch narrow "slats". It has a 1/2 plywood subfloor below. We know nothing of how to care for wood floors. It came with the house. It is only about 20 years old. The problem is that the floors creak and pop a lot. I've studied the floors and the problem seems to be that when pressure is applied to the boards, they flex between each other. This means that the tongue is actually moving slightly in the groove and generating the noise. That, plus the boards actually move slightly vertically and rub each other. I've tried everything. I fear that 1/2 inch plywood is not enough of a subfloor. I cannot easily access the joists below the floor because the basement is finished with a drop ceiling and insulation, or else I would have tried shoring up the joists. Contractors have told me just nail - nail - nail until all the squeaks are gone. I'm no wood floor expert, but even I know that's totally unacceptable. But I did try 3 or 4 nails in one spot to see if it would help. It did not. We are desperate now. My wife is threatening to carpet over the floor. But even if we did that, we'd still hear the creaks and pops thru the carpet, so that's out until the pops are gone. The next/last thing I'm considering is pouring on some polyurethane pretty think, filling the gaps, hoping it will 'glue' the floor solid. I tried this on 2 spare pieces, and it had some limited success. I also figure that if the polyurethane fails, it can always be brought back up with a sander. My only concern is that if it does work, how long will it last? If this fails and I have no other options, the only think left to do is pull the floor up, which is the LAST thing I want to deal with. If you have the time, perhaps you could please respond with some info for me to consider regarding my refinished wood floor. We have a Bruce Hardwood Dura Lustre Floor, red oak strips, prefinished. The floor has been great...but the finish was worn off particularly around our table so we hired someone to refinish 470 sq ft the week of July 11th. This was the first time the floor was refinished since it was installed. The guy had the whole week to do the floor. Monday he sanded and put on the first layer, Tues the second layer, and the third layer on Wed. After the second coat of waterbased semi-gloss polyurethane (Sherwin Williams) I could feel the wood grain was raised and questioned that. The guy told me it would be fine after the third coat. (No stain was applied) After the third coat I could run my nail across the grain and feel the grain of the wood, as well as feel and see ripples on the floor particularly on those boards that have a swirl type grain vs. a straight grain. The guy came back on on Friday and applied another coat. Initially I thought that he just didn't apply a thick enough coat and that there wasn't enough product to self level itself. After the fourth coat........ I can still feel the grain when running my nail perpendicular to a board as well as where each board meets the next. The floor has swirl marks thru out it, there are scuff like marks or dull spots in various placec of the floor, there are ripples thru out the floor but especially on those boards where the grain swirls back on itself. I use a manual wheelchair and when I coast across the floor I can feel the ripples under my front castors. Also the finish seems to look a little milky and is not as smooth to the touch as it was before. He also burned the quarter round at the baseboard under my cabints when he used an edger. I called him immediately but due to his schedule and him wanting the floor to "cure" he was to get back to me in a week. I might add that he was informed that I had contractors scheduled come in to wash my ceiling and walls down due to the enormous amount of dust in the house and to have the interior painted. After three to four more weeks of trying to get in touch with him he has finally schedule to come look at the floor tomorrow (Tues). Not that that guarantees me that he will return to correct his work. At this point I don't really trust him to be able to fix the floor, and I sure as hell don't have the heart to go thru the dust again after having all the painting done etc. but I am just sick over how the floor looks.
