During their first phone conversation, Cliff offers to hire Cindy as a housekeeper and companion. “You would hire someone to live with you?” she asks.

“Yes,” he says.

“I couldn’t do that without commitment,” she replies.

“I am marriageable. Marry me and you’ll be an instant millionaire,” he challenges.

“I have been divorced twice,” she admits. “My first husband and I were childhood sweethearts. We were married the day before my eighteenth birthday. I was pregnant. We had three children, two sons and a daughter, before the divorce after 20 years of marriage. I did not want the divorce; it was bitter.”

“My first husband suffered a mid-life crises and left me for another woman who was not even pretty or nice. The second time I married a man who sang in the church choir. We dated only three months before marrying. My second husband was a real scrounge. He stole $17,000 from me by borrowing on my life insurance policy without my knowledge. He cheated on me with other women. After three years of that marriage I told him he had to leave,” she explains.

“You’re a high risk person,” Cliff tells Cindy after learning about her two divorces.

“That isn’t complimentary,” she replies. “It’s true, I have made some mistakes. But take me as I am now.”

“I’ll send you a snapshot of myself if you’ll give me your address,” he says.

“I’ll give you my post office box number. I use a post office box for mail and an unlisted phone number for security reasons,” she explains.

At 51, Cindy is a dazzling beauty. Her brown hair and brown eyes come from her European ancestors. A touch of Cherokee Indian gives her the mystique any man can cherish. She is intelligent, articulate, sophisticated and elegant. Her easy smile shows off her beautiful white teeth. Her noble face and regal bearing turn men’s heads wherever she goes.

Handsome Cliff’s 160-pound body is strong, muscular and youthful looking for his age. His blond hair and blue eyes come from his German background. He is easy going and confident. “You’re the kind of man I’ve always wanted,” she tells him in one of their conversations.

He retired eight years ago from a large university in another state. He lives on a cattle ranch in Sloan County about 100 miles from Cindy and raises registered cattle.

He feels his hair stand up on the back of his neck as he drives down to meet Cindy. God tells him as he drives along, “You are going to meet your new bride.”

Cindy and Cliff have a lot of things in common. They both grew up in the county where Cliff lives. They attended the same high school. Cindy’s grandfather and Cliff’s father worked together several years ago at the local livestock sale barn. Cliff’s niece and Cindy were high school classmates.

Ten minutes before her meeting with Cliff, she hops into her flashy red Mercury sports car and heads for the restaurant where they are to meet.

“Don’t go into the restaurant without me,” she instructs Cliff over the phone when they set up the appointment. “Wave to me when I pull into the parking lot.”

Cliff arrives at the parking lot before Cindy. He waves as the red Mercury comes by his parked red minivan. The lady waves back.

“Your picture doesn’t do you justice,” she chirps as she walks toward him after they get out of their cars to greet each other. “You could fool someone. You could pass for 55.”

During lunch, Cliff casually mentions that it is often customary to draw up a prenuptial agreement in marriages like theirs.

“I will not sign it!” she exclaims vehemently. “That is just a form of mistrust.”

Cliff drops that subject when he sees Cindy’s reaction. He doesn’t consider a prenuptial agreement very important. “What money I have is God’s money, anyway,” he reasons.

After lunch, they walk back to Cindy’s car. Cliff is thinking this probably is their first and final meeting.

“You have your beliefs and I have mine,” she says as they walk along.

“It’s true we have some differences, but I can do so much for you,” he pleads as she sits in her car with the window rolled down.

“You don’t fall in love at first sight,” he says as he looks into her beautiful eyes.

Her eyes roll at that comment. She is already thinking, “I want this guy.”

“I’m going to kiss you, anyway,” he says as he gently touches her arm. She turns her head and parts her lips for the kiss. “Just on your cheek,” he teases.

“I can really love you,” he whispers as he kisses her cheek.

He tells her he will call her when he gets back home. They both wave to each other as she drives away.

Cindy goes home to do her laundry and some housework as she waits for Cliff’s call, which should be in about two hours.

He is disappointed in the meeting with Cindy because he thinks they probably have too many differences for a long-term relationship and they won’t see each other again.

He drives back to the ranch. He fills the water tank for his cows from a nearby hydrant and finally goes in the house to call Cindy. By now about three hours have passed since they parted.

When he calls to tell her he got home safely, he can tell that she really does care for him. He detects a sigh of relief in her voice from his call. She is concerned that he didn’t call for three hours when the trip back should have taken only two hours.

Cindy is enough interested that she wants to know more about Cliff. “What do you do for a living?” she asks. “You don’t work.”

“I have monthly income from two pensions. I own a 400-acre farm that I rent out and receive money from the owner’s share of the crops. I raise registered cattle and sell them at higher prices than commercial cattle. I also make some money with industrial stocks,” he explains.

About a week later, Cindy calls Cliff and tells him her job as a medical technician is not easy. “I work for a lady eye doctor. My job is to get the patient ready for the doctor. Monday is my worst day -- 13 hours on my feet. I wear support hose to comfort the varicose veins beginning to appear on my front thighs. I wish I had a job that didn’t require me to be on my feet all day,” she complains.

Since Christmas is approaching, her sends her a nice Christmas card. He inserts a $20 bill in the card because he thinks she can use the money.

She calls and thanks him for the money and the card with the blue theme. “Blue is my favorite color,” she says.

Cliff is glad for her call because he wants to keep the relationship going. He knows he loves her and she says she loves him. “There’s 18 years difference is our ages,” he says.

“God does not set age limits,” she encourages.

“Many women want a younger man,” he says.

“I sure don’t,” she replies. “I don’t want some young guy chasing me around the table twice each night.”

She tells him the brakes are about to go out on her car and she doesn’t have enough money to have them repaired.

“Get the brakes repaired and I’ll help you pay the bill,” he offers.

“I can’t pay you back right now. Besides, you don’t know me that well,” she replies.

She discusses some of her financial pressures. “I paid rent and upkeep on my and my ex-husband’s house from February until October plus rent on the house where I now live,” she explains.

“Just tell me the amount of the brake repair bill. I’ll reimburse you,” he offers. “You drove your car to meet me. I would help anyone in a similar situation.”

She gets the brakes repaired and calls Cliff with the amount. He sends her a check for the exact amount of the brake repair bill. “I want you to stay healthy. You can’t drive a car without brakes,” he says.

He receives a beautiful Christmas card from Cindy. “Have a wonderful Christmas. I’ll be thinking of you. Love, Cindy,” she writes on the card.

In a separate note she writes, “Thank you again for driving to see me. I know it was a long trip. I’m so glad we finally got to meet. You’re such a sweet and kind person. I truly cherish our friendship. Take care until we meet again. All My Love, Cindy.”

She visits her parents on Christmas Day. They live on a small farm. Her father, once an auto mechanic, has been disabled with emphysema for 17 years. He wears an oxygen tank constantly.

Her mother is crying when she meets Cindy. “What’s the matter?” Cindy asks.

“The sewer backed up and we had to replace 423 feet,” she cries. “Your father and I don’t have the money to pay for it.”

“Here’s $500,” Cindy tells her mother as she hands her a check. “It’s all I have, but take it.”

She calls Cliff from the cell phone in her car and tells him about her parents misfortune.

“I love you Cliff,” she says. “Can you backstop me?”

“I really do love you,” he says. “Yes, I’ll help you.”

“Love comes from God,” he adds. “I love you because God wants me to.”

“God is love,” she replies.

Cliff’s daughter, Linda, comes to visit her father at Christmas. Linda, 33, is a living doll -- blonde hair, blue eyes, 5’ 5”, 110 pounds, slim, curvy and very pretty. She gets her great looks from both parents.

She is an entertainer in a city about 500 miles away from her father’s home. Her job ends about mid-December and starts up again about mid-March. So, she can visit her father during her vacation.

Her husband, Shawn, 6’ 2”, muscular, athletic and very handsome, is a city employee in a town near their home. He is one-fourth American Indian. “You’re the most beautiful woman in the world,” Shawn tells Linda.

Cindy calls Cliff the first day Linda is home with her father. Linda hears them talking. When Cliff finishes talking to Cindy, he turns to his daughter, “You wouldn’t think an old guy like me living out here alone in a remote area would have a girlfriend, would you?” he asks Linda. “But I do,” he smiles.

He tells his daughter he is helping Cindy financially. “God just opens up your heart and makes you do things,” he says.

“Oh,” Linda says as she looks at her father with great respect.
