Rubber Mats on Bruce Floors?

My name is Franklyn and as the owner of WoodFloorist.com I periodically get emails from people who ask questions about wood floors from all over the world.

Rather than just answer the question for one person I turn the interesting questions into articles and webpages to help many people. Below is one such email and my response.

I love your website. I stumbled upon it looking for information about rubber mats on Bruce hardwood flooring. The manufacturer indicates that rubber mats should not be put over the wood floor because it will discolor.

My problem is, the floor is right by the outside door, and when it rains and snows, I need something at the door (inside) to stand on while we take off our wet coats and shoes, etc.

What if we put a cloth rug under the 3x5 rubber mat?? Or some of that latex grid stuff that prevents area rugs from slipping. But, isn't latex a form of rubber??

This is a great question. First of all you need to realize the possibility for discoloration does exist. Considering how many different brands of rubber mats there are out there the flooring companies are covering their butt and who can blame them.

If they say no you shouldn't put rubber backed mats on a wood floor and you do anyway and the floor does discolor "We told you so...It's your problem!!" is a lot less expensive for them than if they said yes you can put a rubber mat on your wood floor and it does discolor and they have to replace your floor.

You should be asking the people who have a vested interest in you having rubber mats on your wood floor. Namely, the people who sell or rent rubber mats.

If you get it in writing that their mats won't discolor your wood floors and they discolor them, you have someone liable to replace your wood floor if it does.

I doubt they will put that in writing for the same reason the flooring companies won't but they might be able to suggest another solution after all rubber mats is their business.

I did notice that I am placing well on Google for Rubber Mats for wood floors. I must be doing something right!!
