Steaming wood to repair a wood floor in Georgetown, D.C.

Repairing this wood floor in Georgetown required steaming wood. The wood floor under this radiator had turned black after years of this radiator leaking. Doing this repair required finding old wood and steaming it to conform to the shape of the border. I found and old dresser and an old table which I dissassembled and cut the wood to dimension with my table saw. The flooring was only 1/4 inch thick but 3/4 of an inch wide. I had to bend the wood as if trying to bend a yardstick the wrong way.

I built a box and steamed the wood so that it became plyable. I then set in in a jig I had created and let it dry curved. Bending wood like this is much easier when the wood is quartersawn so the bending can follow the natural rings of the wood. I also had to duplicate some of the mahogany pieces as well.

To help with matching color I had to stain the wood after it was installed with antique brown stain and then sand most of the color out. This worked perfectly.
