House Plans and Beginning Considerations

When you build a home, it’s usually a one-time event. There are a number of things to consider as you go through the process, but house building plans are one of the most important. But what type of plan is good for you? What kind of house do you want to build? From Contemporary, to Ranch, to French Country, there are a number of different architectural influences. What about the size of the home? Do you want a one-story home or a two-story home? Some people want a 3-car garage. How do you incorporate these features so you’re still within budget? How about the actual living space? Do you want three bedrooms or more? The bottom line is that there are lots of decisions to make when it comes to the plans.

What you need is a roadmap so you’ll know where you are going with the plan for the home. Listed below are some basic strategies on how you will go about this so you can make the best decisions possible.

First, sit down and list the positive features of both previous homes you have lived in, plus those beneficial features you have seen in others homes. Next, list the negative features. This will help you see clearly what it is you like and don’t like. Then, work on your “wish list” – all the features you have ever wanted in a home. Do you want a gourmet kitchen? How many baths? Do you want a playroom for the kids? What will be the total area of livable space (square footage)?

But don’t forget the smaller, less significant elements. These impact your lifestyle as well. Take for instance your yard and other aspects of the outdoor space. Does your family like spending time there? Do you like to swim? If so, if you’ll want to plan for a nice patio or deck. Next, consider the areas of the home where entertaining or eating will happen. Maybe you prefer a large kitchen with a breakfast bar area or would like a formal dining room. Finally, think about areas of the home where productive times or private times occur. Places like a den, office or may be perfect for you and your family.

The important thing is to make sure you consider these elements within your house plan. By doing so, you’ll make the process much easier and much more rewarding.
