The picture above was taken about 40 years ago. This is where I grew up from
1951 to 1969. A lot has changed since this picture of a 300 acre dairy farm
on Saddlemire Hill Road in Sloansville New York was taken.
(Click on the link above and zoom in and scroll left till you see Saddlemire Hill Road.)
The willow tree to the left of the house grew to over twice the size of the house and the root system was
threatening the house's foundation and had to be cut down. The barn was bright
barn red with a sheeming silver roof. Lots of great memories of climbing around
in the hay there. Shortly after this picture it burned to the ground.
The building immediately to the right of the house was the chicken coop and the
tool shed. (separate doors). It was dragged off it's foundation at the end of
a chain about 50 feet to the right of the house and became the combine shed.
The house in this picture has fake lightbrown brick as siding. My father covered
with cedar siding after this picture was taken and the house was painted white.
New owners have since painted it barn red.
The garage in this picture was torn down. Years of use had taken there toll on the
building. There were lots of holes in the roof and siding. Lots of structural
problems as well. My father replaced it with a whole new three car garage.
To the right of the garage is the garden. We always had a huge garden with
peas, beans, sweet corn, lettice, squash, pumpkins, carrots, radishes, potatoes,
dill and weeds. I never could figure out why my mother wanted to grow weeds.
I think that is was to teach my three brothers, sister and I how important a
good work ethic was. I do know that the cows furnished plenty of great fertilizer
and everything grew well.
Part of growing up involved milking cows after school and helping with putting
in the hay and wheat in the summer. Lots of hard work and the leesons I learned
back on the farm have served me well in the wood flooring business.
