I can understand your point of view. Let me explain it like this. Suppose you had a sponge that had been laying around for 20 years. It was very stiff. Now let's say you put that sponge in a bucket of water. Even tho it had remained the same size for 20 years it would swell up when it absorbed the water. Now take that sponge that is now twice the size it was because of the water and let it dry out. It would shrink again to it's original size.

OK now let's see how this relates to your ceramic tile installation. The wood floor is the sponge. When you add thinset to adhere your tile some of the water in the thinset will cause the wood to expand.

It won't be as dramatic as the sponge but the wood will increase in size from the water. So you have your installation complete and everything looks great. The thinset has hardened and become rigid.

Here's where the problem starts. The wood is going to lose the moisture that caused it to swell up during installation and return to it's original size. The thinset will not change size.

Do you see the problem this could cause? Do you see how this could cause major failure in the tile installation. The reason that the tile experts use Wonderboard or Hardiebacker is that it doesn't return to it's original size because it never changes size in the first place.
