Centralia home built in 1921 has wood floors to refinish

Hello Franklyn
My name is Brent and I'm a fan of your page. I visit it now and then.
(I like the Jimmy Dean thing!!)
Anyway, about 8 months ago I bought my first house (fixer upper) on N Tower
in Centralia. It was built in 1921. When I pulled up the carpet, there were
wood floors that would look beautiful refinished. I'm told they're fir floors.
One unique thing is that around the edges of all the rooms, there's
stain/finish...in the center, there's not. I don't think the center has
ever even been sanded. Could there have been a carpet in the middle of
these rooms when the house was built?
This will be my first wood flooring thing and I want it to look good and
last a long time...with the research I've done, I think I'm about ready
to start.
I'm on an extremely tight budget...(who would have thought a hou$e would
co$t $o much!!)
Also, there were these tacky peel and stick tiles in the kitchen that I
pulled/scraped up. Upon scraping, I gouged the floor in a few spots
(tragic, I know!), and although the floor isn't sticky, there's possibly
some residue and discoloration left from the tiles.
I'm not sure what effect will have when sanding/refinishing the floor.
Half the hallway is severely darker than the other half due to linoleum
or something. These discoloration things are probably something you'll
have to see in person.
The kitchen is next to the last room to get remodeled and don't wanna
sand without taking the cabinets out first. Can rooms be done a different
times?
My plan, if feasible, is to do the living room/dining room first
(they're connected). Then tackle the 1st bedroom and hallway either
a different time or the same time as the living and dining. That would
leave the second bedroom, utility room, and kitchen.
Well, I'm really glad you live in Centralia!! :)
Thanks
Brent

I seem to have quite a few fans of the website. I'm so glad you took
the time to drop me an email. My brother says it's like visiting the
Museum of Natural History... You think you have seen it all and walk thru
one door and realize you have only seen one room.
At last count there were over 3,000 webpages to the website. I've had
several people call it the "Wood Floor Smithsonian".
My goal has always been to make a comprehensive website about wood floors
from a personal prespective. I started building websites when my mother
kept sending me these cute little emails. They always cheered me up so I
named them "Mom's Cookies". I turned these emails into webpages.
There are over 80 webpages made this way.
I started building WoodFloorist.com in November of 2001. I would say I
really got serious about understanding Search Engines about Mid 2002. I
soon realized "Mom's Cookies" had interesting content which could be helpful
in Search Engine Placement and add a little humor to the site as well.
Today they are scattered throughout the website like Easter Eggs. Find them
all if you can. (grin)
The Jimmy Dean thing just shows a little about my sense of humor.
As for the floors in your house, I have done a lot of Fir floors. They are
very beautiful when they are refinished. I do keep some old fir in storage
for repairs if they are needed. To repair old wood floors you really need
old flooring. This usually comes from houses that were torn down and the
wood was salvaged before it was demolished.
There's a lot of history in the N Tower section of town. It would not surprise
that the floors are fir.
Actually, staining or painting around the perimeter of the room is quite common.
I ran into it a lot in upstate New York where I learned the wood flooring trade.
The picture above is a sample of what you are talking about. This was a fir
floor I helped refinish in Portland, OR. Click on the picture to see more
pictures. There are links to 29 more picture galleries of my work on that
page. My goal is to have 10,000 pictures on my website by the end of 2006.
Houses are expensive. I've tried on several occasions to own property. I've
come to the conclusion that houses really own me. I hope it gives you years of
rewards.
My whole program is oriented towards working with people within a tight budget.
I am currently booked out to the end of March. If you want to have me help you
tackle this in April or later let me know.
The residue from the tiles is something I handle all the time. It's really not
a problem. Gouging the floor is common too. The glue is often stronger than
the floor is. I can help you fix all of that. Glue often is a blessing in
disguise. The glue seals the floor very often and it's not unusual for the
flooring under the glue to be in better shape than the rest of the floor.
Sometimes there is damage. Sanding will tell the story and I can help you
deal with what needs to be done at that point.
We can do the rooms separately without any problem as long as we aren't stopping
against the grain of the wood.
I'm glad I live in Centralia too. It's great for what I do. I tell people who
call me from all over the world that it's the ideal spot. I tell people it's
halfway between Seattle/Tacoma amd Vancouver/Portland. It's also halfway between
the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Rainier at 14,000 feet plus.
I conclude that if I want to work I go north and south and to relax I go east and west.
I've had a couple of people want to move here (grin).
Of course there are other places called Centralia. There's Centralia, PA...
Centralia Il....Centralia, KA....Centralia MO and even a Centralia School District
in California. I'm glad I live in the REAL Centralia (grin).
