Alert for all men

Often the difference between a successful man and a failure is not one's better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on his ideas,to take a calculated risk and to act.

FEATURES

20 DUKE ROBILLARD After playing and recording Blues music for over 30 years, Duke Robillard, if anything, is at his creative peak and titillating guitar-enthusiasts with his new material: My new CD is a showcase for all of my guitar styles and writing. There's just about every style of guitar I play on it from swamp/funk to jazz to country-style Blues to a funky version of 'Danny Boy', a 16-minute/10-key tribute to my Blues influences, a tango version of 'Dark Eyes' and a jazzy groove tune that turns into Raga rock.

26 DERRIN NAUENDORF Australias Derrin Nauendorf, has become a familiar name on the live Blues/roots circuit in fact he never seems to be off the British roads! Blues Matters! caught his tail following the release of his first officially distributed album: I think the UK Blues scene is very healthy to me as a foreigner. In my experience, it is much more difficult to make a living from playing music full time in Australia, whilst it has been possible for me to do that in the UK. There are also some amazing artists that you guys have the chance to see in small clubs.

46 JAWBONE Now the hype surrounding The White Stripes has evaporated, youd be hard-pushed to find a Blues-act from Detroit in any British music publication Blues Matters! likes to be different and were showcasing one of the citys best talents, Bob Zabor: I think the music scene (in Detroit) is still pretty healthy, but the buzz is gone. One thing about Detroit, that I think is pretty unique, is that originality seems highly valued. There aren't a lot of White Stripes clones and there never were. And there really isn't a music industry here that's going to try to manufacture one.

54 DION DIMUCCI How many people can say theyve shared top-billing with Buddy Holly? How many Blues artists recording today can say theyve had a string of number 1 hits? Dion DiMucci can: It was very exciting, a lot of fun and very inspiring. You can imagine being 19-years-old and having new Fender guitars and new songs and the excitement of getting before an audience with that kind of enthusiasm to showcase what you can really do. My memory of Buddy is that he was a very deliberate and a very decisive guy...and a strong performer. There was nothing tentative about him. Richie Valens was just so passionate; he had something in his voice that was God-given. It moved you. He had a cry in his voice that pierced your heart.

68 JOE BONAMASSA Few US Blues-acts can afford to tour the UK once every few years; Joe Bonamassa is making his second trip in less than 8 months! Hes also on a mission to save the Blues: I'm a member of The Blues Foundation in the States and there are the purists who say that Blues is nothing but an old man with a guitar, and there's guys like me that say it has to be palatable to the younger generation. I believe if it's not, we will lose the art form in 40 years.
