Training your kitten
In the early stages a kitten will learn to use the litter tray, rest in its own bed, and answer to a name if this is clearly repeated whenever it is picked up or given food. Other forms of training are largely negative. It must learn what is not permitted, including not climbing on to worktops and tables where human food is prepared and eaten, or up the curtains.

The best way to train your cat is keeping a waterfilled spray bottle handy. When you find your kitten doing something it's not allowed, squirt the kitten on the body, not in the face or eyes!
Shoot from the "hip" so that the kitten doesn't associate you with the punishment. The squirt should be accompanied with a loud "NO" and the kitten will quickly learn what is allowed and what is not.

A young kitten cannot be expected to learn much, and has to be prevented from doing wrong by, for example, closing bedroom doors if it is not allowed on beds, or by catching it as it makes a lunge for the curtains, providing some amusing toy instead.

Double sided tape or taped-up aluminium foil on surfaces where you don't want your kitten or surfaces you don't want it to scratch, works wonders.



Scratchpole
It is very important that your kitten has access to a scratchpole. Show you kitten it's new pole and encourage scratching by using your own fingers ... don't drag the poor kittens's claws up and down.
It is recommended that a scratchpole should be situated near the food and water bowls. Your kitten will also love you for placing a scratchpole with a landing in the room where you spend a lot of time.
