This is a picture of a circle I created in a wood floor. It was done as part of the renovation of a condo in Washington,D.C. on upper Connecticut Avenue. The parquet flooring farthest away was square to the front door which is the brown door in the picture. In the middle of where the circle is now was a pie-shaped closet. The parquet on the this side of that closet was laid at a thirty degree angle to the front parquet which wasn't a problem until they decided to take the wall and closet out to open upt the space. The architech's first plan was to have all these angles intersect into a circle made of custom cut marble until they found out what a 10 foot custom-cut marble circle would cost. Because I had previously steamed wood to do a curved repair in a Georgetown brownstone, I was asked to give a quote on doing this circle in wood. There were also other repairs needed and the rest of the condominium had to be sanded, stained and refinished. I got the job because I was one hundred dollars less than the next bid. This is where good guesstimating comes in. The band that forms the circle contains 45 concentric rings of 3/4 inch by 1/4 inch white oak. The circle was created by fastening a pipe in the middle of where the circle was going to be and fastening a rod to my router and cutting out the parquet. I then removed all the parquet that wasn't the same direction as the front door. I then reinstalled all the area inside the circle to match the front door parquet. I cut the bands out of 3/4 inch quartersawn white oak which is what the parquet is made of. Note the walls are being made to conform to this new circle.
