Salvaging Gym Flooring..Is it worth it? This is maple flooring that is being salvaged for repairs. The blue dust is from the chaulk line I used to set a straight "dummy board" to guide the saw to cut the boards prior to salvaging this maple floor. One of the things you need to consider when salvaging old flooring is the time to take up the flooring, taking out the nails and cleaning the tongue and groove.

This is an email I recieved on this subject.

I live in a small, rural Midwestern town. The local school is getting ready to replace it's gym floor (Approx 10K sq. ft.). It's ¾ inch maple that most of the surface is in pretty good shape. I'm a DIY person of moderate skill. I'm wondering about bidding on pulling up the old boards to re-use them in my home as flooring. I have no idea how much work or how difficult or how much work this is, any suggestions? Removing it would be a group of 3-4 guys helping me, I would think. I won't be putting down the new flooring, just taking the old stuff for use in my house.

Also, after/if I do this would it be easier to plane all of the flooring before putting it down on my floor. Or put it all down first, then refinish?

Thanks,

You are talking a LOT of work here. If this is a nail down floor you will have to remove the nails before you use it. The trick is to remove the flooring without damaging the bottom of the groove which is wedged under the tongue.

Taking the flooring up is only part of the equation. How are you going to transport that much flooring to your storage place. There is a lot of time involved in just loading and transporting and unloading. Will this be done by one or more of the 3-4 guys? Nails will be have to be removed to transport the flooring safely and so it takes up less room. Are you going to share the wood with the 3-4 guys?

As far as planing the wood I wouldn't. Just install it and sand it after installing. Planing will take a lot of unnecesary wood off. Drum sanding the floor before before you take it up would be a possible option. This will allow the flooring to come up easier as the finish won't be holding it together.

A slotting Router cuts a 1/4 inch groove into flooring after it's installed. Note the difference of the edge of the flooring before slotting on the right and the slotted edge to the left of the router. A spline is nailed into this groove and makes it so the border is tongue and grooved to the remainder of the flooring. This is very important when doing borders.
