Floor Sanding Problems

Hi,

I imagine you have heard this before and I don't know what the answer is but my husband, Bob and I decided we could sand and refinish the maple floors in our home.

This is not the first time I have heard this story I am sad to say. I have had the same trouble with bug damage under the surface of a perfectly normal looking floor.
The house was built in the 50's. We rented the sander and Bob sanded the front room floor only to discover that there was some kind of bug damage in part of the floor. We tried wood putty but couldn't find the right color so we got desperate and dumb and sanded in three spots for way too long.

Still everything looked OK until he put on the last coat of polycrylic.

I generally try to stay away from polycrylics. I was taught with oil based finishes and still prefer them. You might find that using a satin gloss instead of a high gloss might help tremendously in hiding the uneven sanding.
Then we stood back and looked at the three large dips he had sanded in the floor. Of course this has to be in a spot where we can't put furniture or rug. the rest of the floor isn't going to win any prizes either, as we have a lot of wavy looking marks on the floor.
A square buffer and several coats of polycrylic satin might help a lot with the wavyness. A square buffer is basically a 130 pound palm sander with a handle and some wheels to help move it around. To see a picture of one click on

We were planning on sanding and refinishing the three bedrooms which are also maple but at his point I would like to attempt to "fix" the front room. Do you have any ideas other than taking out that part of the floor and laying new boards? I went to your web site and read about how you got into the business but I don't think anyone is going to offer me or Bob a job working on floors.
From the sounds of it that may very well be a good thing for you . (grin)
In case you wonder where we live, we live in West Virginia.
I lived for 7 years in Northern VA. After moving from Arlington, to Fairlington, to Falls Church, to Fairfax we looked at moving to West VA . It was very nice and reminded us so much of upstate NY where we were originally from we moved back instead. (grin)
Any help you could give us would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Sally.
