This picture shows the beginning of mitering the select red oak around the rectangle. I had to remove particle board before starting this job and you can see pieces of it still in this photo. In the center of the picture you will see a triangle. This is the start of the first direction. The straight line on the left side of the triangle is where the wood will be mitered back to the rectangle that will contain the inlaid goldfish. Notice the loose boards at the bottom of the picture. This is called racking. You lay the boards out loose so that they are in the correct position when you go to nail them. In the Center of the picture you will notice a darker board. This is the strip of black walnut that is in the border. This job was a bit of a challenge too because I had to do the work with the furniture still in the room which meant moving it around as needed. Click on the picture for more info.
